That plane is upside down! edition of: New on DVD

Denzel Washington is such a great actor he can make a nearly two-and-a-half-hour movie about alcoholism not feel tedious. It doesn’t hurt that there is an amazing plane crash sequence to kick things off. See for yourself why Denzel deservedly snagged another Oscar nomination for his performance.
Also this week, a super-serious, not-in-drag Tyler Perry movie, a kinda-sorta romantic comedy, and Kevin James getting punched in the face.

“Flight”

Denzel stars as alcoholic airline pilot Whip Whitaker who manages to brilliantly crash-land his plane after an equipment malfunction. Scrutiny and soul-searching come into play after it becomes known that Whip performed his heroics while drunk. The movie could stand to be a little shorter, but otherwise worth checking out.

“Alex Cross”

Taking over the character of detective Alex Cross from Morgan Freeman (“Kiss the Girls, “Along Came a Spider”) Tyler Perry takes off the dress and tries his hand at being a tough guy. This is a movie that can only be enjoyed by people who think Tyler Perry is an upgrade over Morgan Freeman.

“Celeste and Jesse Forever”

The young titular couple, played by the likable Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg, gets a divorce and attempt to remain friends while dating other people. It’s about as uneven as it sounds.

“Here Comes the Boom”

Kevin James stars as a high school teacher who takes up mixed martial arts fighting to raise money for his school. Not exactly the most subtle movie in the world, still you could do worse when it comes to comedies about people being savagely beaten.
