‘A piercing headache’ edition of: New on DVD

Some weeks the DVD releases get a little rough. But hey, fall is here! Maybe go visit a pumpkin patch or rake the leaves instead of renting a movie. For you masochists out there you can check out some of the lousier movies of 2013, led by a completely and painfully unnecessary sequel.

The only bright spot this week (if you can call it that) is a home-invasion thriller that doesn’t quite work. And while we’re at it, let’s throw in the worst movie Will Smith has ever made for good measure.

“The Hangover Part 3”

So one of the best comedies of the past decade gets its legacy tarnished by two increasingly terrible sequels. “The Hangover Part 3” is just odd, violent, and not that funny. Like after most nights of extended drinking, maybe it would be best if we just agreed that it never happened.

“The Purge”

This is a movie with a really interesting premise — about a society that thrives thanks to one night a year when all crime, including murder, is legal — but then does absolutely nothing with it. There are some really cool ideas floating around in this movie, but nobody ever grabs on to any of them and we’re left chasing Ethan Hawke around a house. Yawn.

“After Earth”

I’ve got so many problems with this movie I don’t even really know where to start. Just know it stars Will Smith and his son Jaden in a big sci-fi cluster-cuss from M. Night Shyamalan. I’m going to have to stop myself, but it’s on the shortlist for the worst movie of the year. Sorry, Will, I love you and all but try harder.
