There is only one movie of note being released on DVD this week, but that is OK as its inherent awesomeness can more than carry the load. “Django Unchained” was, in my humble estimation, the best movie of last year and pop culture’s most substantial meditation on slavery since “Roots.” Of course, it is also a Quentin Tarantino movie which means it also somehow manages to be funny, stylish, and just plain bad-ass.
“Django Unchained”
Featuring Jamie Foxx as a slave-turned-bounty-hunter, “Django Unchained” features a host of fantastic performances from the likes of Christoph Waltz (who won the Best Supporting Oscar for his trouble), Leonardo DiCaprio, and Samuel L. Jackson. The first half of this movie is some of the best work Tarantino has ever done, while the second half is less elegant but highly effective as it forces the audience to look unblinking at the horrors of the past. Saddle up and take the ride, you won’t regret it.
